Summary:
In which Lois Lane just does not get it. What does she have to do to prove she's trustworthy? When will Clark and Jimmy tell her they're married? They're friends! She needs to know their anniversary! How else is she gonna get them the most awesomest gift of all time?!
Work Text:
Lois figures it out approximately two seconds into their first meeting.
Clark and Jimmy are in love.
Better yet; they're married.
She's absolutely, one-hundred percent sure! Obviously, they're on the down-low, keeping their heads down and all that jazz. But she's a journalist—she's got an eye for these things. Plus, they're really obvious. With the way Clark runs away every time Jimmy's looking extra cute? Making an excuse about needing to get more bagels and vanishing for half-an-hour? Yeah, she knows what's up. She gets it. She's connected the dots. It all makes perfect sense!
So why won't they just tell her already?
She needs to know their anniversary! It's vital information! How else is she gonna set them up on an extra (budget-friendly because come on, let's be realistic) romantic dinner? She needs to repay them; look, she gets that they don't need to help her with all this Superman business and the murder board(s), and she wants to show her appreciation. And what better way then a romantic dinner on their anniversary? So really, she doesn't get why Clark makes strangled, terrified noise when she pops up in front of him as soon as he enters their secret base, three cups of coffee with him. "Hey, Lois," he still says, smiling and ducking his head, and she sees Jimmy perk up out of the corner of her eyes. Hah, she thinks. Got you.
"What's the most important date of your life?" she demands, making gimme hands at the coffee until he hands one over. Her eyelashes flutter at just the smell.
Tilting his head, Clark offers, "The day my parents found me?"
"You're found you—no, never mind, we've got more important things to deal with. Like, I don't know, the day you met the love of your life?" Lois stares at Clark, refusing to look away. Jimmy shimmies up beside yer, getting his own cup of coffee while Clark's blinking at her in wide-eyed confusion.
"I—what?" Clark blinks again.
Jimmy laughs, that kind of smitten laugh that tells Lois everything she needs to know. Super in love. Totes in love. More in love than the most in love people on earth! Ah, she sighs, waving her hand at herself. Young love. How adorable. "I think she means, are you seeing anybody, loverboy?" Jimmy asks, wiggling his eyebrows. Lois nearly snorts, but bravely holds it in at the last second.
"Ah, I, no?" Clark's eyebrows draw tight together, and he stares back and forth between Jimmy and Lois. No mercy is offered. Mercy is for the weak-willed! Lois won't give up!
"Hmmm?" Lois says, crossing her arms and raising an imperial eyebrow. "So you don't have an important date with a special someone coming up?" She wiggles her eyebrow to make her point, and Clark looks at Jimmy like he's looking for the questions to the very universe itself. It's unfairly cute.
"I got you, man," Jimmy says, tossing his arm around Clark and dragging him further into the room. He winks at Lois, then carts Clark around and murmurs, "The stress is just getting to her. Don't worry about it!" And pats Clark on the head, ruffling his hair. Clark's still staring at him, blinking slowly, but he's smiling, patting Jimmy right back and then they're kind of scuffling a little bit.
It's adorable, but she still doesn't have an answer!
