Written for Small Fandoms Fest - Round 35. Prompt: Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, Umetaro Nozaki/Mikoto Mikoshiba, The truth about Mamiko comes out.
Work Text:
"Mikorin," Nozaki yelps, shaking Mikoto by his shoulders, eyes wide and surrounded by dark circles, ink for sure smudging on Mikoto's clothes from his hands. "You've gotta get married."
"...Eh?" Mikoto finally manages to force his thoughts into sensible words. Then his face explodes in color, and he pulls back as far as possible when Nozaki doesn't let him go. "I don't know what you're talking about! I don't even have a girlfriend!"
"But you can get one by the spring equinox, right," Nozaki leans in, staring at him with a haunted gaze. "It's the special edition issue. It's got to be perfect! It's Mamiko's wedding! Don't you want Mamiko's wedding to be perfect, Mikorin?" Nozaki shakes him again, leaning in even more, and they're basically just hugging at this point. Mikoto blusters, because of course Mamiko's wedding should be special, perfect, the most amazing thing ever, but what has that got to do with him?!
Sakura coughs delicately from her table. "Ehem, if I might have your attention," she says.
"Mikorin, I need you!" Nozaki yells over her, pulling Mikoto into a tight hug. He's big and warm, and Mikoto has always been weak to Nozaki Hugs™; he goes boneless immediately and ignores Sakura's sighing. "You're the only one that can help me. Get a girlfriend, and get married!"
"It's not that easy," Mikoto says into Nozaki's shoulder, voice somewhat muffled. "Getting a Real Life girlfriend is difficult, you know. I can't just go out and... do it." He sighs, hugging Nozaki in return. It's really a great hug, even if he is worried about the sound of utter despair Nozaki is making.
Nozaki stumbles back to his chair, dragging Mikoto with him. Sitting in his lap, Mikoto pats Nozaki's head. "There, there," he says. "I'm sure you can solve what's wrong." He glances at Sakura, mouthing what's wrong at her. She resolutely turns away from him.
"I can't do this on my own," Nozaki admits, near tears. He sniffles, and stares at Mikoto like he's his savior, eyes glittering. "I need a reference."
Slowly tilting his head, Mikoto's eyebrows slowly furrow.
"A reference for the wedding? Why don't you just go to someone's wedding?" His brows furrow further. He resists the urge to wiggle and fidget, keeping his hands on Nozaki's shoulder to remain balanced.
"I did," Nozaki says. "I went to Seo and Waka's wedding." He groans in despair again and Mikoto looks to Sakura. She's super smart, she must know what's going on. He pleads at her with his eyes, pouting before he gets himself under control.
"He got traumatized," Sakura explains, crossing her arms over her chest. "And now whenever he thinks about weddings he gets sick. He's been trying to get the references from movies, since he can't go to real weddings anymore, but it's not really helping."
"It's horrible. Help me, Mikorin. You're my only hope," Nozaki begs. His eyes are big and afraid, and he looks horrible, like he's been working nonstop for days. He's going to make himself sick, Mikoto thinks, frowning.
"Well, why can't Sakura get married?" is the only thing he can think to say in protest. Sakura glares at him, her gaze flinty and cutting.
"She's not Mamiko," Nozaki states, blinking at Mikoto like Mikoto's the one being weird. Sakura makes a strangled noise.
"...eh?"
Nozaki's eyes widen, and he rapidly shakes his head. "I mean, she's too short! And her hair is the wrong color!" Panicking, he his voice keeps rising in pitch.
"But any girl I married wouldn't be Mamiko either," Mikoto points out when Nozaki has run himself ragged and wheezes for breath.
"That doesn't matter as long as you wear the dress," Nozaki says, giving Mikoto a thumbs up. "You'll look super pretty!"
Mikoto blinks. He blinks again. And again.
And again.
Blushes so much his face is broken.
"You—!" He clambers to his feet and points at Nozaki, shaking from the riptide if emotions barreling through him. "I'm not a girl!" Mikoto loudly declares, and gestures to his crotch.
Nozaki's eyes follow, and then he's blushing too, and then Sakura says, "We all know you're a man," and starts blushing as well, and then Mikoto does that thing where if somebody else is blushing, his body copies them, and he groans as the heat goes to his head. Crouching down, he hides his face in his hands.
"Mikorin," Nozaki says at last, crouching down and patting his back. "You would look really beautiful in a wedding dress. Will you marry me?"
Sakura faints.
Mikoto sympathizes.
"You—" he starts, and falls silent. Nozaki, he realizes, is serious. That's his serious face. He's not joking. Mikoto's heart skips a beat, and hus fading blush instantly returns. "I'll wear a wedding dress if you do, too," he says instead of anything else. Glances up at Nozaki from below his red eyelashes. "That's my final offer."
"Deal," Nozaki says, and nods decisively. His grin is infectious, and Mikoto can't help smiling, too. He isn't really sure if that means they're actually getting married or not, though.
But he wouldn't much mind if they did.
